Any movie about wish granting can either lead to hilarity or terror as the wishes end up being twisted. In the case of The Final Wish, the wishes granted prove to be very deadly indeed.
The movie is about a struggling law student who ends up called home after the death of his father. He is clearly an outcast as everyone including his grieving mother are angry for him being gone and not keeping in contact. He discovers mysterious artifacts his father had kept, and one of them seems to be granting any wish he desires. But as he finds out. the results of his wishes can prove to be fatal.
Let me come out and say Lin Shaye who portrays the mother is fantastic in this movie. She can switch from being sweet to venomous in a drop of a hat.Though not as terrifying as Wishmaster, this movie has some moments of dread. Tony Todd also shows up to dump exposition on our protagonists. Which I didn’t mind as he has that voice that commands your attention. He could be reading a recipe, and I would still listen to him. He reveals the source of the wishes, and you come to realize the purpose behind granting of the wishes. And just when you think in the end thar the man may have outwitted his fate, the saying of not messing with forces you don’t understand applies here.
I think what is tricky is that it’s hard to do something new when it comes to horror movies about wishes gone wrong. This is something that was already explored in Wishmaster, so it’s hard not to compare this movie to what came before. I know in my head all I kept thinking is this is exactly like Wishmaster, just on a smaller scale. Not to say this movie wasn’t enjoyable or scary, as it had its moments, but most of the time it’s going to feel like you seen this before.
The film is currently streaming on Amazon Prime if you want to see it for yourself. If you already seen The Final Wish, feel free to leave your thoughts below!
Till next time, stay scared!
