V/H/S 94(2021)(Review)[Weirdo Wednesday]

‘VHS’ is a series of anthology films all filmed with a lo-fi, low budget aesthetic. Each segment is written and directed by a different director – many of which have gone on to do much bigger projects such as Ti West, David Bruckner, & Adam Wingard.

V/H/S/94 is the 4th film in the series. It was released to Shudder exactly a week ago and it follows the same formula as its predecessors.

A SWAT team raids what they believe to be a drug manufacturing compound only to discover something far more sinister. We see a bunch of corpses scattered in different rooms in front of static televisions. The officers review the footage in each room which displays the stories we see.

There are 5 stories in total – including the SWAT team roundabout. “Holy Hell”, “Storm Drain”, “The Empty Wake”, “The Subject”, & “Terror”. Each story is completely different than the last and they are completely unpredictable. Some involve the dead, some involve the worst of humanity, and some involve things that transcend basic comprehension.

Each story is fantastic in their own way, with my personal favorites being the first two (the second one being probably the most anxiety inducing thing I’ve seen in a long time). If you’ve seen the earlier entries, this ranks as probably my 2nd favorite, right behind #2. If you’re unfamiliar with the series, it holds weight much better than most contemporary anthologies.

I give this film a humongous recommendation. It’s fun, clever, and brilliantly made when you consider that almost every story takes place in a single location. I’d love to go into more detail, but since the film is so fresh I’d rather leave it ambiguous. This film is AMAZING to walk blindly into.
