Venom: Let There Be Carnage(Review)(Happy Halloween #11)[Terrifying Theatrical Tuesday]

If anyone is familiar with the Venom comic books, they know his nemesis Carnage is a pretty terrifying creature. His bloodlust is nearly insatiable. So how does that translate to the big screen? Does it do the character justice? I am here to tell you it goes as you expect with Hollywood either not understanding the source material or dumbing it down to make it more palatable to a wider audience.

The story follows the continuing symbotic relationship between Eddie Brock and Venom. They are getting life back to normal, well as normal as it gets when Eddie is invited to interview a captured serial killer Cletus Kassidy. After being served his death sentence, Kassidy is infected by a symbiote and becomes the deadly being known as Carnage. It is up to Venom to stop him before Carnage destroys him first.

There is a good bit of humor throughout the movie as you would expect, and Woody Harrelson enjoys chewing the scenery with his portrayal of Cletus Kassidy. Once Carnage enters the picture, his scenes are atmospheric and have horror qualities. You get some blood, but they do keep it PG 13. It would have been better rated R. That’s not the worst transgression though. No, that’s when they decide to give Kletus a love interest. She is a mutant named Shriek. Now if you know anything about symbiotes, you know they are sensitive to sound, hell the movie reminds of this. Why of all things unholy would you pair these two together? It’s like water and oil, the two won’t mix. Maybe it was to give Carnage some kind of weakness, but the whole thing didn’t make much sense to me. In the comics, Cletus Kassidy was a killer who had no love for any human, and especially when he was infected with Carnage, everyone was expendable to him. So to show him as this love struck guy who first thought after receiving his powers is to be reunited with his lost love?! Yeah it bothered me.

Other than that, the movie is pretty spectacular, and had some good scary moments. It leads to pretty epic final battle(for now?) between Venom and Carnage, and yes Carnage does go into his Maximum Carnage mode. And maybe as nod and wink to the audience, but yes Carnage does actually utter the line “Let there be Carnage!” I almost groaned..almost. But stay tuned for the mid credit scene that will make your jaw drop to the floor.

If you enjoyed the first Venom movie, then you should have a fun time with this movie. The biggest takeaway is hey, we at least got to see Carnage on the big screen, so hey take what we can get right? It is still in theaters if you want to see it, though I feel it’s biggest draw will be the buzz around that mid credits scene.
