Texas Chainsaw Massacre(2022)(Review)[Terrifying Theatrical Tuesday]

Following the reboot/sequel trend or requel as we are calling it now, Texas Chainsaw Massacre follows the events of the first Texas Chainsaw Massacre film 50 years later. The results are gory kills but the trade-off is some rather clunky moments.

The plot sees a group of woke people coming to Harlow, Texas, and being in a place where they do not belong, they invoke the wrath of an older and more vicious Leatherface. We also see the return of original survivor Sally Hardesty who ends up called to action to face Leatherface once again.

The good is the kills, and we see Leatherface is has grown more shrewd in his older years as well. If there is a lesson to be learned besides not barging in where you don’t belong, it’s not to mess with one’s family. That ends up being the catalyst which feeds into Bubba’s rage, and spells doom for anyone dumb enough to cross his path.

Speaking of dumb, let’s talk about the elephant in the room. There is a scene in a trailer where Leatherface boards a bus full of young people partying, and they all raise their cellphones to livesteam him. One of them utters the line “Try anything and you’re canceled bro”. Many people decried the moment as the clunkiest part of the movie and I wholeheartedly agree. It is awkward and stupid, but it also leads to one of the best kills of the film. If we examine that, you could say this is a response to cancel culture, that it should be slaughtered just like the unlucky people on the bus.

It leads to the final showdown between Leatherface and Sally Hardesty along two last survivors. It contains scenes that will have you screaming not only out of fear, but due some ridiculous things that happen as well. There is a post credit scene at the end that teases the franchise is not at end quite yet.

For the most part, I enjoyed the movie. I thought the whole old meets new concept made the movie work, even though it had its not so good moments. The same guy responsible for the Evil Dead requel produced this, and after viewing this, I can understand why they opted to release this exclusively on Netflix as opposed to a theatrical release. Theatrically, it would have bombed as opposed to currently trending on Netflix. If you are a fan of the Texas Chainsaw movies, you should enjoy this reiteration. I say there is no harm in checking it out. It’s not as terrible as it is made out to be, but definitely not the best either.
