Quake Original Soundtrack Remastered Review[Musical Monday]

When the Quake Remastered was announced and then dropped on consoles this past August 19th, my excitement was palpable. What added to that excitement is the fact that it would include the remastered version of the original soundtrack composed by Trent Reznor.

Imagine if Trent synthesized his music in a factory powered by the souls of the damned. That is the most accurate way to describe what you will experience when listening to this soundtrack. The music serves to build up the tension of the fire fights you will experience, as well as building up the existential dread as you explore the labyrinthine corridors of each level. What adds to the experience is as you listen to the music, you will have screams and moans throughout. Some tracks will contain quiet endless whispering. It’s enough to make you feel even more on edge as you cautious try to avoid the unknown terrors each mission offers you. Other than Doom, Quake is the next horror based First Person Shooter that I played a lot when I was younger, and it was my first multi-player experience. Words can’t express the amount of fun and hours of sleep lost as you go around fragging other players.

The Quake soundtrack was once lost to time and very rare to find in print, so it’s good to see it have life again. If you are able to, you need to track this down and give it a listen. It is one of Trent Reznor’s best works, and it fits the atmosphere of the game perfectly. Listen to one of the tracks below for an example of what you will hear:

Till next time, stay scared!
