Around the same time Jurassic Park was gearing up for its release, another dinosaur horror movie tried to capitize on the growing popularity and it failed miserably. Imagine Jurassic Park if it was a b horror movie, and you get Carnosaur.
It had everything Jurassic Park had, such as also being a film adapted from a novel and having dinosaurs . What it didn’t have was the huge budget and the story writing. The plot is about a geneticist who plots to wipe out humanity with her new breed of dinosaurs.
So even though the idea was new at the time, it didn’t quite have a great execution. This movie was produced by Roger Corman and the designs of the dinos especially when they are attacking humans is pretty laughable.
Then there are people who are getting mysteriously sick and you get that bad feeling in the pit of your stomach as to the cause, and yep they went for it. Even the geneticist is not immune and there’s a scene that kind of mimics the chestburster scene from Alien. It all leads to an action packed ending scene where you witness the battle of a T-Rex vs a small loader. What happens after that is pretty brutal considering you expect after what happened to see a hero win the day, and the credits roll. But it doesn’t exactly go that way.
It is very hard to take this movie seriously especially in knowing it was stealing the coattails of Jurassic Park to the point the original plan was to release the movies at the same time. They wisely decided to release Carnosaur first, which helped it get a small success. It’s pretty bad, and as the norm when it comes to these type of movies is that it became a trilogy.
Dinosaur horror films are very limited and the ones that do exist aren’t visually appealing nor do they have a stellar story. If you interested in a different style of film, then check out Carnosaur but be aware it is very rare and essentially out of print now. You can find watchable versions on YouTube however.
Till next time, stay scared!
