Orphan(Review)[Twisted Throwback Thursday]

With the prequel coming out next month, I thought it appropriate to discuss Orphan. It is most famously known for its shocking reveal towards the end of the film yet still gets classified as an evil child movie.

The plot sees a couple who tried having a baby but it was stillborn. To help cope with the loss, they decide to adopt a child named Esther. At first things seem fine, but then Esther starts displaying increasingly disturbing behavior. The family must learn the truth behind her before she destroys them all.

Right away, the movie shows us what we think is just another disturbed child. Maybe it was her upbringing or she was just born evil. What the parents find most disturbing is Esther knows things most children would not be old enough to comprehend and they worry about the influence she will have on their other children. They have every right to worry as Esther will go so far to resort to violence to get the other children to fall in line with her master plan.

What is that plan you may wonder? That’s where the shocking reveal comes to play in Esther’s true origins. I am sure most of you already know but I’m still going to refrain from spoiling it. This reveal was lauded because you don’t expect it and the execution was just perfect. The movie was very innovative for its time, and still is talked about to this day.

It will be very interesting to see how the prequel sets up the beginning of Esther’s journey to the dark side. Maybe we will get more information to what motivations led her to become the person she was. I don’t expect they can top the twist of the first movie but we shall see.

Orphan is currently streaming on Paramount+ if you are thinking of seeing it for the first time or you decide to revisit it like I did to prepare for the upcoming prequel.

Till next time, stay scared!
