Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum

Paranormal films that show people who will go to any lengths for popularity are always a great experience especially when those people are taught lessons on messing with things they should not be messing with. We seen that especially with found footage horror films such as Deadsteam or Grave Encounters. And this holds true with the Korean found footage horror movie Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum.

The plot is about a podcast group who decides to film their experience in an abandoned asylum that is known as a hot spot for paranormal encounters and find themselves in a situation that is very real and impossible to escape from.

As we begin the film, it starts out very jovial with the group prepping for their experience. Once they enter the asylum, the mood changes a bit. Little by little, the paranormal starts creeping in as they explore around. There’s a red herring at first with the phenomenon before it starts getting absolutely bonkers and creepy.

It reminded me of Grave Encounters in some ways especially when it starts getting horrifying towards the end. There is one particular sequence that is very unexpected and startling to say the least. What is known however is they could have escaped their fate if they left well enough alone and quit while they are ahead. That’s where the aspect comes in of doing things just to gain popularity and finding themselves in a situation there is no escape from.
This film will rub your nerves raw especially towards the last 30 minutes or so. It gets pretty frightening and I can see why others have lauded this as an effective terrifying horror film. And the ending definitely nails the landing.

If you have yet to experience this one, I highly recommend it. It is currently streaming on Amazon Prime for you to go view it.
