Based on the initial trailer and images, I was having high hopes for Tarot. However after seeing it, I was very disappointed. It had good ideas, but it was too clichéd. It felt tailored to young adults more so than a broad audience.
The plot sees a group of young adults who are partying and they discover a box of tarot cards . They each are given a reading and learn the cards are cursed. As the predictions come true and they are killed one by one, the survivors must find a way to break the curse or they will be the next to die.
So yeah right away we are getting the Temu version of Final Destination. All the deaths are telegraphed beforehand just listening to the readings given. So you already know how each of them will die. As each their predictions coming true, the movie treats you as stupid and beats you over the head again by having the reading repeated to us again except this time in a distorted voice to make it extra spooky.
The designs of the cards were cool. There is misinformation that tarot cards are of the devil and this movie definitely takes that and runs with it by making the cards summon demonic figures. The Fool and The Magician was the creepiest of the bunch.
We get a lore dump behind what causes the cards to be cursed in the first place. Everytime you turn around something is jumping out to scare you. It gets old after awhile. The deaths were pretty bloody but we do get a fake out death. And then it turns out all it takes to end the curse is the power of love.
It’s not totally terrible. It could have been more and I have a feeling the PG-13 rating was a factor as to why it got dumbed down. It didn’t meet my expectations but it may have more mileage with someone else. It is currently available on Netflix if you want to check it out for yourself.

Till next time, stay scared!
