Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004)(Review)

Welcome to the inaugural release of The Giggly Gazette! Where all things fun and silly are embraced with open arms. No more shall we live in fear, for today we begin anew. And to celebrate, today we will be covering an absolute American classic – 2004’s ‘Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story”

Average Joe’s Gym is on its last legs. Owner Peter La Fleur (played by Vince Vaughn) has a good heart, but a dopey brain and a lack of ambition. When his gym is on the brink of foreclosure and being sold to the neighboring gym, Globo Gym – which is owned by White Goodman (played by Ben Stiller), Peter and his comrades come together to raise the $50,000 they need to keep ownership. When all options seem to be exhausted, it is suggested they enter a tournament to play competitive dodgeball in Las Vegas. But they all suck. In fact, almost none of them have played before today.

This film is silly, slapstick fun. It has more ball jokes than Thanksgiving Dinner with my uncles, more quotable one-liners than Charlie Sheen on a bender, and more testosterone than a middle school locker room. The fact that it has some heayweights as supporting characters (such as Justin Long, Joel David Moore, and Alan Tudyk) just add to the love this film has going on in multiple levels.

If you have yet to see this beautiful piece of Americana cinema, do yourself a favor and do it. It may just be one of the best films ever made. Endlessly entertaining, inspiring, and very fast paced. It never fails to deliver.
“Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story” is available on DVD at basically every thrift shop, antique store, flea market, or still-running FYE.

‘Til Next Time – stay silly!
