Creating a movie of a man surviving a post apocalyptical world that’s been invaded by Lovecraftian creatures, the Argentinian horror Into the Abyss certainly provides atmosphere and world building. I’m sure much got lost in translation as the version I saw was the English Language version. Mostly I was left underwhelmed by what I was watching.
We start out following a man named Bannon right smack in a middle of a world in ruin. He is trying to survive and make it to a different world. He ends up facing threats human and non-human alike.
The movie starts out really good showing potential. We get our first glimpse of one of the creatures. He finds a radio and ends up communicating with a fellow survivor. The film just tails spins from there.
When it comes to Bannon, his scenes are very solemn. He is shown going through pictures and playing voice messages from his former family. They apparently got separated during the events. He just wants to escape a literal hell that he had found himself in. We don’t see how this happened or what led to him being where he is. We are thrown in in the middle of his struggle.
He encounters different people but sometimes it’s hard to tell who is actually there. For example he encounters his father though that interaction just seemed weird. Not being able to tell if it was actually real. Because yeah there is a element where Bannon is experiencing psychotic breaks and seeing imagined people.
And when Bannon meets the fellow survivor of course things go sour between them and that’s the focus for the rest of movie.
The creatures that do appear were fine..much of those encounters take place in complete darkness. Maybe due to the budget. The atmosphere was fine. But still I found myself more so bored than thrilled. And yeah these type of films, a human element would have to exist but wish we could have seen more of the creatures.
This was just quietly shuffled to streaming, it’s currently on Tubi if you want to see if for yourself. Just don’t expect much from it. If you want to see a better film that will melt your mind, I recommend When Evil Lurks. It’s not Lovecraftian but it does well.
Till next time, stay scared!
