Gruesome Gazette

Pyewacket(Review)

Those darn teenagers, always summoning demons to solve their problems, and it always goes wrong. That is what we see happen in Pyewacket which on the surface is your average horror movie but there is something deeper lurking within.

The story is about a mother and daughter who are disconnected due to the loss of the father. Full of teenage angst, the daughter performs an occult ritual to target her mother but feels guilty afterwards. She tries to stop what’s coming but learns what she did cannot be easily undone.

The movie takes it time to establish the somewhat damaged relationship between the mother and daughter. The mother is concerned of her daughter’s interest in the occult which as it turns out she had every right to be.

Then it slowly creeps the horror in as the daughter experiences supernatural events. Her best friend sleeps over one night but something terrifies her to the point she never is seen again.

The ending is quite brutal though it will leave most viewers confused. Was a possession taking place or was the whole thing a figment of a teenager’s wild imagination? It’s very vague.

Mostly the true horror is the horror of grief. How it can cause a rift in the surviving family. The catalyst that sets the chain of events off is when the mother decides to move to escape the reminders which is definitely understandable. Sometimes it’s very difficult to survive a loss and then adding possible demonic manifestation to the mix makes it much more complicated.

I thought this film was pretty good, I liked how it took its time letting us know the mother and daughter before the horror elements begin. That ending, definitely a holy shit moment. This is currently streaming on Shudder if you want to check it out.
