A project that waited so long to even happen only to end up denied a theatrical release due to Covid, the latest Salem’s Lot remake had a lot going against it. It was apparent that going from nearly 4 hours to just under two hours, much was going to be left out of what happened in the book it was based on. It’s very scary. So yeah safe to say this is not the most perfect adaptation(Look for Salem’s Lot from 1979 or 2004), but it holds up well.
The plot is about an writer who returns to his childhood home only to see his small town being infested by vampire’s soon after his arrival.
Bottom line, the Salem’s Lot book was King’s attempt to bring Dracula into a more modern world. Most of the important plot points remain fairly the same between the two with different elements.
The part this movie just barely glances over which has more importance to the book and also The Dark Tower series is the fate of Father Callahan. I don’t want to say much except it pissed me off the way that was handled.
The vampires were pretty cool especially with the glowing eye effects. The design of Kurt Barlow was definitely a nod to his appearance in the 1979 version of Salem’s Lot. But dude was straight just chilling the whole time while his minions did everything for him. We barely get to see him.
Lewis Pullman who is the son of Bill Pullman portrays Ben Mears pretty well coming off of suave and confident. The rest of the characters felt like fodder for the vampires. With the exception of Mark Petrie who also is important to the plot.
The ending felt rushed which doesn’t help matters either.
It’s more creepy. It mostly highlights of what happened in the novel and reimagines some of the events or characters. I liked it. But I can see where people would complain for leaving too much out. I’m just happy it got released after all the delays.
If you want to see it for yourself, it is currently streaming on Max.
