Besides body horror, I am a sucker for alien invasion flicks. Especially if they aim to do something a little bit different. Last year we was given Fried Barry, and I absolutely enjoyed that trip. This year, we have Seed, and oh boy does it get weird.
The film is about three women who go on a getaway to view an upcoming meteor shower. The night the event happens, a meteorite containing an unidentifiable creature crashes into their pool, and the women are left trying to figure out how to get rid of it. The problem is the creature is happy in its new home and has no plans of leaving anytime soon.
From the moment the creature lands, you are left wondering when the other shoe will drop. You expect something to happen as you wonder what it is planning for the women don’t realize an alien is in their midst. They think it is just a dead animal even though it is very much alive. Once the creature reveals what it wants, the film takes a turn for the worst and does it quickly. It gets goopy and oh yeah, there is some body horror involved that I enjoy so much. The movie takes it time to get us to that point, but the wait is absolutely worth it. You will go from casually watching to biting your knuckles once things start escalating.
Two things I loved about this movie is one, how everything is done with practical effects. The alien design was different as it was ugly but at the same time they made it so endearing. Secondly, I loved how this movie does not rely on fan service in the lines of nudity to carry the film. In fact, even with the characters being all women, there’s no nudity at all. Even in scenes you would expect it. There is a good bit of sexual scenes, but even those are left to the imagination.
This movie was just fun to watch as it reminded me of alien invasion movies from the 90s. I wouldn’t say it’s the best I seen but it is enjoyable. The ending scenes of the film will seem familiar but people will enjoy the bloody finale. This is a Shudder Original and I feel good in recommending you to check it out for yourself. If you already seen Seed, feel free to leave your thoughts below!!
Till next time, stay scared!!
