Parker Finn has returned with a sequel to his hit film Smile. Smile 2 is an improvement on the first film as it amps up the tension and gore. The psychological warfare the entity puts it victim through is more intense this time around as well.
Following after the events of Smile, the story sees pop star being infected by the entity. As she struggles with her demons of her past and mounting pressures that come with fame, she has to figure out how to escape before she becomes the next victim.
The film just as the first one takes it time setting the table before whisking the tablecloth away, sending everything crashing to the floor. It’s still creepy and definitely more gory this time around.
Also let’s talk about how this movie oddly connects with The Shining. Besides the design of the carpet looking familiar, there is also the fact of Jack Nicholson’s son playing a role. And yeah he definitely brings same unsettling vibe just like his father. If this guy played The Joker, I don’t even want to think the level he would bring. When he appears on screen with that unblinking creepy smile, yeah chills. So resembles his father.
We learn the main characters had demons before becoming attached the entity. She has to deal with the consequences of her past and let’s say the entity really messes with her in that regard. The mental trickery that occurs is really something.
That really comes to play in the ending. It’s goes in a way you wouldn’t expect and leaves things open for future installments in a big way. And Finn teased he is already thinking of part 3.
In all, i thought this definitely was great horror film, it is an improvement on the first one. We see more of how the entity manifests itself. Creepy factor is more. More bloody. I would even say this is on top 5 of best horror films of this year.
The film is currently playing in theatre’s. Definitely worth checking it out. I highly recommend it. And if you have nightmares of Ray Nicholson just standing there with a creepy smile, don’t blame me.
