Gruesome Gazette

Sting(2024)(Review)

We were graced with two arachnid horror movies this year and both had similar settings taking place in apartment buildings. It’s hard to say which one is better Infested or Sting as both stand out on their own and are both fun to watch. Unless you are an arachnophobe, either one you won’t have a good time.

The story is about a spider from outer space that ends up being taken in by a young girl as a pet. It quickly grows out of her control and preys upon the tenants in the apartment building she lives in.

After the opening titles, which i appreciated that sequence. it starts out kind of cute especially when the spider mimics the sounds the girl makes. She names the spider Sting based off The Hobbit from JRR Tolkien. Which is interesting because in the book because Sting is a magically imbued blade that Bilbo ends up using to fend off an attack by giant spiders.

The spider displays intelligence, and is able to escape the jar the girl is keeping it in. It uses the vents to go through the different apartments within the building. We have the girls family, the grandmother who suffers from dementia, the evil landlord, a Spanish lady who is a lush, and lastly a scientist who just happens to be a biologist who knows a lot about spiders. The spider starts out small but as it starts going after bigger prey, starts growing very quickly.

It produces acidic webs and its bite is very toxic, causing instant paralysis in anyone unfortunate enough to be bitten. The Spanish lady is the first victim and the scene where she is attacked then eaten is very gross.
There is a subplot of the little girls family and adjusting to a new father figure who also is the building superintendent. There’s strife there but they bond to fight against the threat of the spider.

This a production from first time director Kiah Roche-Turner and they did their homework. Besides The Hobbit reference. the film also references Little Shop Of Horrors and Predator .It’s scary, fun, and has some comedic moments. And at the end we get a battle against the giant spider to see who will survive.

I really enjoyed it, it was a nice touch giving the spider abilities they don’t normally have such as mimicking sounds. It’s gross, will make people shiver, and tons of fun. The film is available on DVD or you can rent it on Amazon Prime.
