The First Omen(2024)(Review)

Ah, another day, another requel/prequel in a beloved franchise’s Canon. When word of a prequel to ‘The Omen’ hit the streets, it was naturally met with skepticism. However, you’d be mistaken to overlook this film as just another unnecessary legacy sequel, for it has some bigger targets in mind.

‘The First Omen’ follows the story of Margaret, a young woman whose just flown into Rome to begin her teachings to join a nun’s convent at a young girl’s orphanage. As she learns about the political/religious upheaval going on in the country, along with the questionable treatment of some of the foster girls in the orphanage, she soon begins to hear whisperings of a diabolical conspiracy that involves the potential forthcoming of the Antichrist. As blood is spilled and her sanity comes into question, things only grow more dangerous and consequential.

This movie blew me away. I’m not the biggest fan of the franchise as a whole, but it succeeds at both standing on its own and smoothly joining the legacy. The violence hits hard, the mystery unravels in a labyrinthian way that throws you at each twist, and everything from the cinematography, to the music and acting are top notch. Nell Tiger Free wonderfully succeeds in the leading role as we feel for her and follow her journey into Hell.

If you’ve been on the fence with this one, dive right in. Its tense, its scary, and has some unbelievable images that linger with you. It’s easily my favorite film of the year so far.
