The Guyver(Review)

The Guyver has been on my watch list for quite some time, so when I learned Unearthed Films was releasing it in 4K, I jumped on the opportunity to watch it. It was certainly a treat and was absolutely worth the wait.
The plot is about a college student that discovers an alien mechanical device known as The Guyver and it merges with body transforming him into a super powerful cyborg. He battles against mutants known as Zoanoids who are trying to claim the technology as their own.

This film wastes no time in showing just how completely bonkers it gets in showing us transformations the Zoanoids go through from human form to mutants. The effects are insane, but with Brian Yuzna in charge, you come to expect that. One of the Zoanoids reminded me of a Gremlin crossed with a fish. And it has gold chains as well as raps very badly.

Then you have the cast which features Mark Hamill, Michael Berryman, Jeffery Combs who plays Doctor East which is a tongue in cheek references to his Dr West character in the Re-Animator films, and David Hale as the main villian who played Dr Carl Hill in the first Re-Animator. He just as much of a creep as he was in that movie. There’s even a cameo from Linnea Quigley and even more of a shocker, she’s fully clothed.

This is just such a fun film to watch containing humor and action. There’s a good bit of body horror including one disgusting scene of Mark Hamill being transformed into what can be described as some kind of lobster/insect. We even get a final boss battle at the end.

This is one of those movies I knew I was going to love. It’s such a good time, and when it releases on June 25th, I would highly recommend picking up a copy.
