The Lair(2022)(Review)

After Dog Soldiers, Neil Marshall gave us another military monster movie in the form of The Lair. This was a return to form for him that yeah the dialogue was a bit silly but it delivered on intense sequences with lot of blood.

The plot is about a female Royal Air Force pilot that ends up shot down in Afghanistan deep in enemy territory. She runs into the nearest underground bunker to escape only to discover a lab that has containers full of creatures of unknown origins. The creatures end up unleashed and chaos ensues when they track her and attack a base camp full of soldiers that picked her up. Now they must hopefully survive insurmountable odds if they want to live to fight another day.

The creatures end up being a result of genetic experimentation comprised of humans combined with aliens. And of course it’s the Russians who were responsible. The monsters prove nearly impossible to kill. They are absolutely vicious killing anyone in sight. They also do this thing where they shoot out long tunbs out their mouth to ensnare their prey.

The soldiers end up being no match for these things. They end up capturing one they think is dead, perform an autopsy on it only to for it to still be alive. Eventually it’s decided to take the fight to them, so the survivors go back to the underground lab. The ending is very nail biting and explosive.

The movie is very exciting and gory as heck. The way the characters interact gets campy and stereotypical otherwise it delivers on the thrills and putting everyone in intense situations. I liked this one. I would highly recommend watching this and it’s currently streaming on Hulu and Shudder.
